In MetLife’s annual U.S. Employee Benefit Trends Study 2021: “Redesigning the Employee Experience: Preparing the Workforce for a Transformed World,” MetLife identified the top three factors that will affect the workplace of the future. Employee well-being is predicted to have the greatest impact on the workplace of the future (74%), followed by the ability for employees to work remotely (71%), and employee mental health, stress, and burnout (70%). Nearly three-quarters (72%) of employees rank work-life management benefits and programs among their top five desired benefits to improve well-being.
Why Breathe?
Well....to live!
Mental clarity, a freer body, and greater productivity!
Focused breathing boosts energy, reduces stress, and eliminates burn-out! Mindful breath support lowers heart rate and blood pressure, helps manage pain, improves sleep, and boosts your body's immune response.
Recommended dose: all day every day
Why Stretch?
To grow...yes, really.
Without it, muscles shorten, become weaker, and increase our risk of illness and injury. Stretch creates ease and energy.
Flexible people sleep better, suffer from fewer injuries, build lean muscle more easily, have higher self-esteem, and are good at "bendy" things..
Recommended dose: every morning
Why Laugh?
It's the ultimate mind/body connection.!
Laughter reduces stress chemicals in the brain and increases oxygen throughout the body. Our body's response to laughter stimulates organs, the heart, lungs, and muscles, and increases endorphins released by your brain.
Endorphins make you feel good!
Recommended dose: multiple times daily
Why Move?
You gotta move it, or lose it.
Physical health and mental health intersect on all levels. Movement fuels our (inner) engine, increases oxygen at a cellular level, and ignites us with the vitality to thrive.
You can't get out of your own way unless you move!
Pro tip: learning dance moves improves memory.
Recommended dose: on your mark, get set...
"Employee well-being has increasingly become a focus and even a strategic imperative within most firms over the past couple of years. "Employees whose workplaces encourage them to adopt and maintain healthy habits — such as mindfulness exercises, taking regular long walks or repeating short bursts of activity throughout the day — have been found to be healthier and more productive. That means there could be a real return on investment for employers as well."
It’s not unusual for firms to enter the wellness space with a big splash that subsides to a ripple. As management priorities shift, the opportunity to integrate a culture of health can pass. Ideally, a wellness program should be a natural extension of a firm’s identity and aspirations. But many executives forget that the cultural shift takes time.
The WHO recognized burnout as a "workplace condition," and listed feelings of "energy depletion, negativity and cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy."
In the wake of covid-19, it's critical for businesses to address the mental well-being of their teams, leading to healthier organizations from the inside out.
Burnout often stems from a “lack of understanding about what it takes to achieve peak workplace performance. ...We tend to assume that [it] requires trying harder or outworking others, [which] may get you short-term results but [is] physiologically unsustainable.” To perform at your best over the long term, you need regular “opportunities for restocking your mental energy,...
