For most of my life, I’ve made a living stepping into other people’s lived experiences.
As a director, helping others step into their roles.
As an actor, stepping into character.
As a writer, stepping into story.
As a team builder and crew leader, how we show up for ourselves and others are the roles we choose.
An actor prepares, makes decisions, and consciously steps into their role. In life, we may not always be aware of our choices.
At home. At work. We step into our roles and behave and react inside them. Parents, teachers, leaders, medical professionals, service providers, partners, athletes…These roles are not about being someone else, but about showing up as the person we want to be.
I’ve directed hundreds of performers and been an institutional instructor to thousands of students, and realized the awareness required to step into a role is a process that applies to us all.
Best of all, knowing how to do it creates a sense of play--as clear intention and actively choosing really set us free.
